kaboom + making of
April 17th, 2009I know I’ve posted stuff by PES before (the rubik’s cube stop-motion thing), but it’s just so good, and then there’s the making of, which is a great look into the mind of someone who would make little films like this that obviously take tons of time and effort…good stuff…
the film is awesome, and the detail behind the making of it, and the time obviously associated with making it, is awesome, but i get this weird phony feeling that the only reason he made the film, was so that he could make the “making of” the film….its like did anyone ask him to do that? i mean you never saw hitchcock making films about all the crazy cool little things in his films that made them hitchcock films….i mean maybe he did, but i dont remember seeing anything like this that he did, he just let the films speak for themselves, and let people over time catch on to all the signs and symbols, this pes guy seems fascinated with semiotics and wants everyone to know
I don’t think it comes off as phony…I agree it’s a little weird to spend so much time explaining the art behind it, but I think a lot of it is coming from a place that you could just watch this 2 minute film and let it breeze right past you…PES wants you to know that there’s more going on here, and sometimes it’s happening so fast you can’t even catch it, but it’s there…maybe the work would be more “genuine” if he didn’t have any explanation of it, but much like a lot of contemporary art, finding out how it was done adds a hell of a lot to the art itself…
the comparison with Hitch maybe brings something out — he was making entertainment films that he filled full of subtext, if people got it, great, if not they could still enjoy the film…PES seems to think that a lot of the enjoyment of the film will come from the subtext he’s building into it…should he trust that we will get the subtext on our own? maybe. but the film is under two minutes and is so sensory overwhelming you might not even think to look for a subtext. much like people didn’t look for subtext in Hitch’s films until some smarty critics started pointing stuff out…
I dunno, it’s a good point, but I get so much enjoyment out of seeing the process and how much thought went into it that it doesn’t read as phony to me…his whole site is great, you might like this one:

the last scene is priceless
yeah, interesting, its like whats more important, the piece, or the making of the piece? i dont know a lot about contemporary art, for that matter art itself, but its like whats important, the process or the product? can it be one and not the other? all that being said it was still gangster to hear him break down the piece, esp love the fact that he had the old keys lying around and that he thought the breaker reminded him of an aerial shot of a city…..i had a brief moment where i was like oh my god, imagine what he could do with man’s world!!!
will check out link, and keep the blogs coming
PS, the fact that the doc used you, your health and the word “miracle” in one meeting is one of the things i will dedicate my first beer to today!!!!
