warm it up…

January 4th, 2010

The photo is Banksy, the blog I got it from is here, it was a tip from AK and a good one. When we were in Hawaii toward the end of trip we hit kind of a sour note as we got into a big debate with the people we were staying with over global warming. It was raucous, voices were raised. And basically it always seems to come down to what you want to believe: either that authority is telling the truth and trying to get the world to change, or that authority is trying to manipulate you for some other, nefarious reason. Reading through the comments on the blog where this pic was posted, I came across this gem of a response, which is how I have always felt about it:

"I have yet to see a model that explains the current warming that leaves out effects caused by humans. Apart from that, I don’t really care who caused the problem or if the problem is a hoax in the first place. It’s a good time anyway to step away from the old kinds of energy and start transforming into a sustainable world."

Exactly.

Wow…fluxtumblr just blew my mind with this…this is not the official video for this song, but a piece done by a dance troupe in Austin, TX. Beautifully well done, and really really well directed. If you aren’t in the mood for this kind of thing, well get in it and watch this. Full-screen if possible.

nerds (continue to) rule

Hey wouldn’t that be a great name for a blog and then a book based on the blog? "nerds (continue to) rule", I love it. This could be the first post:

This song is kind of weak, but in this context it works less like a song unto itself and more like a soundtrack to this amazing video. Too creepy for a Monday, I’ve saved this one for Tuesday for you…thank me later…(sent from Malcolm, thanks!)

I like this a lot…

I’m trying to think of other things that go in there…like finishing a project that has dominated your world for a time…watching a marathon of a guilty pleasure…

until you check with the vaudevillians…

I remember seeing this routine as a kid and it stuck with me. Even watching it today I can remember the whole shtick that went along with the cube, and how amazing it was to see.

You say you want a timelapse video of an artist painting a giant portrait of Battle Cat from He-Man? I got you covered.

Hey nerds, get a job.

Or actually don’t, instead keep making stuff like this.

I’ve been reading (courtsey kottke) this amazing New Yorker profile on Ricky Jay, the master sleight-of-hand conjurer and expert on the history of magic and cons. It’s fantastic. In the blog post, kottke then links to one of Jay’s tricks, and it’s right up my street — clever, old-timey, shmancy patter…good stuff…watch the cards…

This banner was taken at a site a couple of blocks from our house. Down by the Gowanus canal there’s this huge site that’s been bought by Whole Foods, and during the real estate boom/non-recession, it seemed like ther perfect place for a Whole Foods. But now the economy is bleak, and they’ve discovered that the ground there is so toxic from all the crap and sludge that pollutes the canal, that it’s gonna take a zillion dollars to get it all cleaned up.

Someone broke into the site and painted this massive command onto the remains of a wall. Pretty nice. I wonder if it was the same folks who did the "open your eyes"/"fuck wall st" that’s painted on the old factory across the street from it (and was joshgranger.com banner two months ago). I saw this and wanted a picture of it so bad that I broke in there myself to get it.

Fun facts about the Gowanus Canal:

– it featured in the film Half Nelson

– there is bacteria growing in there that is found nowhere else on earth (thanks KT!)

– when a whale accidentally swam up into the canal, that whale died

melt your heart

This I love. The music is so great, the concept so simple, the execution so classy and well done. It’s kind of hypnotic, and I feel like there’s more going here somehow…watch it again…
